Maine Photos

Here are a few of many pictures I took in Maine this summer.  I had fun playing with the different settings in my camera, and trying new things!

Pretty Peony

I took this picture in our garden in our backyard.  The peonies were in full bloom in late June and were absolutely gorgeous.  The pictures I liked best were really up close.  I think it's beautiful to be able to see each individual fold of the flower.

Modern Day "V.J. Day Kiss"

After closely studying the photos and style of famous photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, I had to make my own photo using his style.  I decided to do a modern twist of the famous photograph by Eisenstaedt called "V.J Day At Times Square."  Although I don't live close to the city, I made the background a more country feel.  The man in my photograph is wearing a baseball cap instead of a sailors uniform.  Overall I was excited about how similar my photo looked compared to the famous photograph.

Abandoned Door Series

This is a catalog photojournalism project I have been doing for a couple weeks now.  Going around Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, I looked for abandoned doorways to photograph.  With signs of rust, graffiti, and broken windows, the doors have an interesting and artistic look to them, which interests me.  In total, I photographed about 30 doorways, and plan to do more in the future.

A scratched and broken boarded up door is locked multiple times on Railroad Avenue in Oneonta, New York.

The front doorway of Otsego Iron & Metal factory in Oneonta, New York stands boarded up and locked.

A yellow doorway with broken windowpanes and rusted hinges is found at the Otsego Iron & Metal factory in Oneonta, New York at 50 Rose Avenue.  The business specializes in making many different guardrails.

An old, boarded up door is overgrown with tree branches and weeds behind Main Street in Oneonta, New York.

A white door in an alleyway off Main Street in Oneonta, New York is covered with graffiti.

Sand bags lay in front of an unused door to a power room on 5th street in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

Abandoned doorways in Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts show signs of deteriorating, rust and graffiti.  Groups shared ideas in Oneonta, New York about decreasing housing issues Tuesday, February 6th at a three-hour meeting at Center Street Elementary School.  Decreasing the number of deteriorating, vacant, and abandoned houses was one of the topics addressed.

USS Constitution

I took these pictures in Boston while on the deck of the USS Constitution.  I wanted to focus closely on objects people may pass by without noticing while on the ship.

Lighting Studio

These are some pictures I took while practicing and learning about light.  I was in a lighting studio and didn't have very great lights.  The lights were all very harsh, so I used a paper-like structure and placed it in front of the light to diffuse it a little more.  The middle two photos still have harsh light, but I thought it kind of worked with the subject, especially with the second one.
It was fun to do some portraits for a change.  I usually like photographing objects and nature, and it was interesting to try something new.  I ended up really enjoying it!

I'm still not sure which photo is my favorite, any advice?

Fruit

I recently got an assignment where I had to take pictures of fruit.  It was really open ended, but I got creative.  I wanted to play around and experiment with the fruit.  I was really happy with some of my results.

Swans

I never knew I was going to see so many swans when I went to England.  In Stratford Upon Avon there were so many together in the river.  They were so beautiful.  Which photo is your favorite?

London Phone Booths

London is known for their amazing phone booths!  They're all over the place and they make the city really fun.  If only they had red phone booths everywhere!

St. Paul's Cathedral and Millenium Bridge

I took this photo because I liked the modernized part of the city (Millenium Bridge), with the old (St. Paul's Cathedral) in the background.  The clouds were super spooky, which I thought added a lot to the picture.

UNDERGROUND

The Underground is by far London's most reliable and quickest form of transportation.  Also known as the "tube" this has become a popular part of London's tourism industry.  People buy underground maps and "mind the gap" shirts all the time when visiting.

I wanted to capture the popular underground sign.  Whenever people see this symbol they know a station is there.

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge goes over the Thames River in London.  I went on a river boat cruise and got to see it during sunset.  It was so beautiful!

Big Ben

One of London's most famous landmarks is Big Ben.  Technically the name of it is "The Clock Tower."  The bell inside is named Big Ben.  Anyway... I went both during the day and at night to capture it's beauty.

Traveling!

I'm in LONDON!  I'm making my way through some of England for a class.  It's beautiful and there are so many amazing photo opportunities.  I've been taking about 100 photographs a day.  I really hope to capture the culture of both London and smaller places outside of the city.  Be ready for some major photo updates!
